Click to watch Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs): Wilkin Sanchez

The video was published by Opportunuity@Work in collaboration with Departure Point Films. Opportunity@Work is a nonprofit social enterprise aimed at expanding career opportunities so that individuals Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) can work, learn, and earn their full potential. Wilkin was first introduced to Envision through TechHire Rhode Island, a program of Opportunity@Work.

In the video, Wilkin describes his youth in Baní, Dominican Republic, and his role in running a computer and phone repair shop out of his house to help people in his local community. When he moved to the United States in 2014, Wilkin found that many of the jobs he was hoping to apply for – computer technician, IT help desk, and call center positions – required more than 2 years of experience in the United States, or even a 4-year college degree. “I felt like a lot my skills were going to waste,” he remarked.

By getting involved with TechHire, Wilkin was able to improve his resume, interviewing skills, and most importantly – his confidence. The nonprofit introduced him to the team at Envision, who were seeking a candidate that matched Wilkin’s unique skillset. Envision quickly extended him an offer within their Ground Control Managed Services division, and he accepted. “This job has helped me improve my life exponentially. I’ve been able to significantly grow my skills and experience, while also helping my family in both the Dominican Republic and here in the United States.”

Andy Robinson, Ground Control Managed Services Leader, also provided commentary: “Wilkin is a not only great asset to our Ground Control team, but he also gets rave reviews from our clients. They truly get satisfaction out of working with him. His attitude of positivity, as well as his willingness to help, is unwavering. He continues to impress us with his growing list of accomplishments and endeavors. We’re very lucky to have him here at Envision.”
